Security
Yellowstone can provide a variety of security measures
to ensure that your data remains safe. These products include firewalls,
backup devices, anti-virus toolkits and UPS (Uninterruptible Power
Supply).
Anti-Virus Software
Yellowstone currently favours Kaspersky Anti-Virus
produced by Kaspersky Labs
in Moscow. Yellowstone favours this package over other products
we have tested due to it's ease of use, high reliability in
detecting viruses, ease of update and good network capabilties.
We believe it is the best anti-virus product on the market.
In conjunction with a close computer consultancy called Computerwise
Services, Yellowstone has negotiated a favourable rate on
this product for our customers. The cost of the package varies
depending on the number of servers and workstations to be
covered. The licence is renewable every twelve months and
Kaspersky Labs provide free daily downloadable updates to
the program, providing you with the most up-to-date anti-virus
protection.
UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)
UPS is an essential complement to any installation involving a
server. In the event of power failures, the UPS allows a server
to remain running. The UPS uses batteries to maintain the power.
In the event of the power not being restored and the batteries becoming
exhausted, the UPS initiates a controlled server shutdown. This
ensures that the data on your server remains intact and uncorrupted.
Yellowstone installs UPS devices made by APC.
We will be happy to quote, supply and install a UPS device on your
system to ensure that your server stays running so data on it is
not corrupted through power loss.
Backup Devices
Yellowstone can supply a range of backup devices and software to
provide your system with full data backup security. Depending on
the size of your organization, backups should be done anything from
once a day to once a week. They should be done using a sequence
of tapes in rotation to ensure that you can always recover your
data in the case of hard drive failures, hardware theft or accidental
deletion.
Our usual backup solution is based on a DAT drive DDS-3 device
providing 24Gb of storage. This is controlled through a piece
of software called Novabak from Novastor
Corporation. However Yellowstone can provide cheaper,
or larger capacity systems depending on your needs, as well
as other software packages. We can also supply large capacity
backup devices such as the Ultrium LTO drives from Hewlett
Packard - which hold up to 200Gb on a single cartridge costing
under £100. If only the tape streamer itself was this
cheap !
Firewalls
Yellowstone can provide the installation expertise on a variety
of firewall products to protect your network from intruders:
- Personal firewalls (software based only) - e.g. McAffee
Personal Firewall (£50)
- Hardware devices which connect between your network and
your router / ISDN modem - e.g. A 3COM
hardware firewall (£400)
- Large PC-based firewall solutions - based on the Check
Point Firewall-1 product (about £2000)
Firewalls are 100% essential for leased lines, cable modems and
ADSL circuits, and fairly advisable for any particularly active
dial-up connections. In our experience a permanent connection to
the Internet can attract 300+ outside attacks per day. Without a
firewall your privacy may be extremely compromised.
Once these products are supplied they must be set up correctly
and periodically tested and monitored to ensure that they are functioning
correctly and protecting you from outside attack.
